Weird and Wonderful Words

yaffle - an English dialect name ofr the green woodpecker (I did not know there was such a thing as a green woodpecker).  The word originated in the late eighteenth centur apparently in imitation of the bird's characteristic laughing call;  also, in some parts of Britain, it is known as a yaffingale

Professor Yaffle is also the name of a character who is a carved wooden bookend in the shape of woodpecker, in the children's Tv series Bagpuss.
