Errol, a young boy whose ale addiction has made him the laughingstock of the town, in order to earn money for more ale, offers to take a message to the hermit who lives outside of town. From that moment on, his life changes, as someone tries to kill him, first with arrows, and then with poison. He has no idea why.  The hermit and his friend insist on him leaving with them, as all three flee assassins.

A fast paced and interesting tale. The magic system is different enough to intrigue, and the characters are well drawn and believable.

Hope the author can keep up the good work for the rest of the series.

It sounds interesting in general but I probably won't track it down because the basic premise of the start seems so ridiculous - coming to it from the RL medieval POV, it's about on a par with a modern Englishman being addicted to tea; if he's the laughing stock of the town my reaction would be that they're finding it hilarious that someone is addicted to something that everybody drinks all the time. Calculations for household supplies reckoned in terms of a gallon or more per man per day.

Well, he's very young and he's drunk from dawn to dawn, so... Still, I agree. Everyone drank then.

It was fairly difficult to get drunk on ale; and he'd have been drinking it since he was a small child, so I'm still wondering "how?"
